To lead off here on my first Blog Entry for Consulting Corner, I am supposed to come up with something really clever and insightful! That is quite a tall order.
What do I do at work and what things am I into? I thought about this and listed two key things: Networking & Consulting. Over the years as a consultant, I think I have become a pretty good networker. It is something that I really enjoy and in a way it is like marketing for my business. It is a part of "getting famous" and getting known to a larger circle of people as a resource who can help them out.
Marion and I attended the reception for IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) in July, 2005. This is the British equivalent of ASME. The speaker was Sir Andrew P. Ives and the topic was "Engineering: The Ultimate Reality Show". It was a good presentation with many interesting insights and lively questions.
Sir Andrew expressed some good concepts in equation form (leave it to Engineers to write an equation!!). The system of 2 equations went as follows:
S + E = T
T + E + M = I
Here is what it means:
- You take Science (S) and add Engineering (E) to produce Technology (T).
- Next, take the Technology (T), by adding both Engineering (E) and Marketing (M), you can produce Innovation (I).
This shows the very real importance of Marketing in creating awareness and in figuring out how to get Technology out to the paying public. And besides, Marketing people really know how to have FUN!!
